Art strives to enable all to be creative and to express yourself in a creative way. Students are encouraged to follow pathways which push and develop core skills, artistic appreciation, expression and understanding. Students have access to a wide range of media, resources and influences within the Art department. We believe that everyone can be artistic and we encourage students to perform and express themselves throughout their study of Art.
During Year 7 your child will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of projects which will encourage them to explore and develop their drawing skills, art appreciation, cultures and techniques. They will explore different media and materials and will be encouraged to develop their own working style as well as to contribute to the lesson through discussions and research. They will produce work for at least three projects each covering areas of the Art curriculum and will take skill-based assessments looking at pushing their personal skills and technical practice.
During Year 8 your child will have the opportunity to continue their artistic development through a variety of projects and media development. They will be encouraged to explore techniques, media, historical as well as cultural art which will develop their ability and appreciation for the subject and push expectations through assessment and evaluation. This gives all students who opt for it a continuation of Art appreciation and exploration. It is designed to develop and broaden artistic experience and relates all work to practical, hands-on approach.
This course is split into two elements – coursework, which is worth 60% of the overall marks and an externally set exam project, which is worth 40%.
Students will explore and develop different drawing approaches, media and Art techniques. This course recaps previously learned skills and introduces new media and exploration of ideas and techniques. They will look at the work of artists and other cultures as well as research and produce work based upon themselves and their interests.
Pupils will complete at least three coursework projects and enter 45-hour equivalent of studies for their assessment. They will then prepare for and take a 10-hour exam based upon an externally set paper.
This course is for those who wish to specialise in Art and the work relates to a practical working environment and is based upon creative briefs designed to expand and increase skill and subject knowledge. Each project specialises in a different form of Art/media, prepares students for A-Levels and creates good links with further education.
This gives all students who follow it the experience, appreciation and skill set used in photography today. Students will look at the techniques and processes of the past and present; the influence of photographers from the past to current practitioners; and put their own theories and development into practice.
Students will complete at least four coursework projects leading to a final exam brief which will culminate in a 10-hour exam.
This course is for those who wish to specialise in Photography and the work relates to practical, skills based development and progression of personal techniques and outcomes designed to build up subject knowledge, appreciation and personal ability.
GCSE Photography follows the same marking criteria as GCSE Art.
Post-16 students will be able to move on to A-Level, BTEC or Foundation courses. From there they may wish to access a range of degree courses relating to everything from Fine Art, Digital Media, Illustration, Photography, Game and Media design to name but a few. Both Art and Photography are useful in many career pathways and these GCSE courses are an ideal starting point for those considering a career in the Arts.
