VALE OF YORK ACADEMY IS PART OF

Business Studies

Curriculum overview

The business studies course will develop students’ ability to recall, select, communicate and apply their knowledge and understanding of business concepts, issues and terminology in a variety of contexts. Through planning and carrying out investigations and tasks they will develop the skills to analyse and evaluate evidence by making reasoned judgments and presenting appropriate conclusions.

Business Studies is taught in 3 units:

Unit 1 Setting up a Business External exam (40% of the final mark)
This unit introduces candidates to issues concerning the setting up and operation of a business. It explores the activities of business and the reasons for success or failure. It encourages candidates to appreciate that businesses must operate within society and that this involves businesses engaging with a wide range of stakeholders who will hold differing perspectives.

Unit 2 Growing as a Business External exam (35% of the final mark)
This unit builds upon the content of Unit 1, allowing candidates to study businesses as they grow and the issues that expansion raises.

Unit 3- Investigating a Business- controlled assessment task (25% of the final mark)
This unit is a controlled assessment unit. The work must be each candidate’s own individual response and must be produced under controlled conditions.
