Name: Kym Houston
Achievement: Trainee Vet
Year of leaving school: 2013
I left school in 2013 and I’m in my fifth and final year of studying to be a vet down in Bristol and will be graduating next July! I’ve aced all my exams somehow and I’m in the top 5% of my year (against lots of posh privately educated people from rich families). I ended up the Vice President of the vet schools society and got involved with many different things and groups at University. I’m now deciding where I want to practice (here or in Australia) and what species of animal to work with and thinking about going down the route of becoming a diplomat/specialist in a certain part of vet med. I’m currently on rotations at University (rotating around different parts of the hospital learning different things and actually being a vet!) and also back home doing placements in York at odd times in the year. Studying to be a vet has opened many doors for me and allowed me to go and work in South Africa and help rhinos and offered me so many great internships.
I never imagined moving so far away from home and loving it so much or ever achieving the grades I did to get into vet school and it just goes to show you don’t need to pay 30k a year to get where you want to be.
