VALE OF YORK ACADEMY IS PART OF

Girls Active team leads Kwik Cricket Competition

The Vale of York Academy Girls Active team has taken a lead role in a recent inter-school cricket competition hosted by York Cricket Club.

Over 130 girls from 13 primary schools across the city came together to take part in the Year 5/6 Kwik Cricket Competition. The round-robin cricket tournament was organised by Rachel Hildreth, York Community Officer for the Yorkshire Cricket Board.

The Girls Active team were asked to support the event after they did such a fantastic job supporting York City FC in a recent event.

Girls Active is a project launched last year by the Youth Sport Trust to promote girl’s leadership and participation. The project helps schools to understand what motivates girls to take part in sport, enabling teachers to work with girls – through consultation and leadership – to make the necessary changes to their PE, sport and physical activity provision.

Initially six girls were nominated by the PE Department to undergo the initial Girls Active training and they have now recruited an additional six students to form the team.

Rachel Hildreth tweeted “What a brilliant day at @YCCJuniors for the Y5/6 Girls Kwik Cricket Competition, 13 schools taking part, over 130 girls! Huge thanks to @ValeYorkAcademy for their lovely Young leaders!!”

More opportunities and an expansion of the Vale of York Girls Active team will be coming in the near future.
