Name: Aimee Wilkinson

Achievement: Teacher

Year of leaving school: 2011

I left Canon Lee in 2011 and went on to college to study Childcare. I passed that with a triple distinction and applied to a number of universities for the Primary Education Degree. After interviewing for two, I was offered a place at both and chose to go to York St John University to study 5 to 11 Primary Education for three years. I stayed at home while doing so but still enjoyed my time there.

At the end of my degree, I passed with a 2:1 and got a job as a primary school teacher here in York. In my first two years I taught Year 1 and my third year I taught Year 3, which is where I’m currently teaching. Throughout my time at the school, I have taken a lead on PE which involves school sport and physical activity too. I have never excelled in sports but have always loved them, so it’s great trying to instil the passion to be active in the children. It’s important that they know it is THEIR best that counts, not THE best.

I love teaching. It is hard work but so rewarding and so worth it. I’m constantly learning how to be better at what I do. I was told at college that York St John was out of my reach because I had chosen not to do A Levels, but I applied anyway and I’m so glad I did! My advice to students would be – believe in yourself and don’t let anyone tell you can’t.
