Name: Lucy White
Achievement: Banking – Goldman Sachs
Year of leaving school: 2014
Since leaving Canon Lee in 2014, I have been fortunate enough to experience some extraordinary opportunities and thought it would be good to share this with you as motivation for current pupils!
I completed my A-Level studies at York College, earning grades of A*AA, which meant that my place to study Accounting and Finance at the University of Bath in 2016 was accepted. The course lasts 4 years and includes a ‘year in industry’ during year 3, meaning that I was required to spend 12 months in full-time employment. After a number of vigorous application processes in London at some of the top financial institutions, I was awarded a position at Goldman Sachs – the world’s leading investment bank. The placement programme in London was the most challenging year of my life; I worked 50+ hour weeks to lead projects, engage with key stakeholders and present to senior employees throughout the firm, all at the age of 19-20. I am now looking forward to returning to university for my final year in September, and aim to return to Goldman Sachs in London on a Graduate programme next year.
Ultimately, since leaving Canon Lee School I have experienced a great deal and learnt more than I could have ever imagined. Evidently, there is a lack of Northern talent in the financial services sector in London and I believe that this is because of limited opportunities and a lack of understanding about this area in the North of England. I would be very happy to discuss key tips with pupils who have an interest in finance to try and help them on their way to becoming a top financier!
